ABOUT THE JOB.
A Deputy Sheriff provides three core services, Jail Security, Court Security and Service of Civil Process Documents.
Graduates of the Basic Training Academy are assigned to Jail Security and given the tools to provide a safe and secure environment for inmates and staff.
The job requires strong communication skills and teamwork. During a shift, Deputies must show a sense of urgency and compassion and be able to provide assistance in an emergency situation.

Wages and Benefits.
Starting salary for Deputy Sheriff II is $60,055
Henrico County Sheriff’s Office is committed to providing one of the highest starting salaries in the region. The entry level salary for Deputy Sheriff I is $57,305 and Deputy Sheriff II is $60,055.

Basic Qualifications
- Deputy I candidates must be 18 years of age by application date.
- Deputy II candidates must be 21 years of age by hire date.
- High School Graduate/GED
- Must possess a valid Virginia Operator’s License by date of hire.
- Must be a United States Citizen to participate in application process.
Accepting Applications for Certified Deputies/Jailors
If you are currently a Deputy or Jailor in the State of Virginia, we are accepting applications from certified applicants. Once employment with the His confirmed, pre-certified applicants attend a modified academy or in-service training to become familiar with the Henrico County Sheriff’s Office operations and policies.
No application for the position of Sheriff’s Deputy will be considered if there is an indication of any of the following:
- Illegal us of any Schedule I, II, or III drugs (i.e. hash, cocaine, crack, heroin, opiates, LSD, PCP, Mushrooms, barbiturates, ecstasy, steroids, amphetamines, etc.)
- Criminal activity, which is of a serious nature, reflects moral turpitude, or indicates a tendency to disregard the law (theft, perjury, fraud.)
- Conviction of a domestic assault.
- Traffic violations with an accumulation of six penalty points within the past 12 months.
- Applicant is not required age for Deputy I or Deputy II position.
- Applicant is not a high school graduate or has not completed a GED program by date of hire.
- Applicant does not possess a valid Virginia operator’s license by date of hire.
- Use of marijuana or THC products from the date of your application (regardless of whether the product is legal at the time and place of use.)
- Any conviction or plea of guilty or no contest to a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Any conviction or plea of guilty or no contest to any misdemeanor sex offense in the Commonwealth of Virginia, another state, or the United States, including but not limited to sexual battery under Section 18.2-67.4 of the Code of Virginia or consensual sexual intercourse with a minor 15 or older under clause (ii) of Section 18.2-371 of the Code of Virginia.
- Any conviction that requires the registration in the Virginia Sex Offender Registry.
- Illegal sale of any drug or narcotic.
- For former military, not having received an honorable discharge or general discharge under honorable conditions.
- Applicant is not a U.S. citizen by time of hire.
Specialty Positions
Court Security
Court Deputies assignments are in the General District Court, Circuit Court and the Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court. These buildings have a total of 17 courtrooms and two lock-ups.
Court Deputies monitor the safety of all persons, including inmates and judges, inside the courtroom, hallways, lobbies, front scanners, and sometimes even the parking areas.
Civil Process
Civil Process serves all civil and court paper within Henrico County. In addition, they are responsible for conducting Emergency Custody Orders (ECO) and Temporary Detention Orders (TDO). They execute evictions and property seizures and serve Personal Protective Orders (PPO).
Transportation
Our Transportation team is responsible for the safe and secured transport of inmates between facilities, to medical treatments, as well as court appearances all over the state. Members also partner with civil process to carry out Temporary Detention Orders.
